cleaning schedule

when we moved from a tiny apartment to a ((relatively giant)) HOUSE, my time spent cleaning seems to have multiplied tenfold. it's astonishingly easy to let our home become a mess...but i just can't live like that.

if i don't keep up with the dust and clutter, i become overwhelmed -- and instead of tackling one task at a time, i start trying to ignore it. that never works. the mess accumulates until i reach my tipping point -- this is when i go into a cleaning frenzy. and when it's all over, i vow never again to let our home get so messy.

to make things easier for myself, i decided to make a weekly cleaning schedule. this way, i spend maybe an hour a day cleaning.
   that's not so bad.

once i get the day's tasks done, i feel a sense of accomplishment and don't stress about continuing to clean because those tasks are for another day.

painting the upstairs bath

the walls of the upstairs bathroom needed a general freshening up, but ONCE AGAIN, the previous owners did not leave a can of the current color in the basement. so instead of touching up here and there, i decided to repaint everything.

i really liked the blue-based grey on the walls. pulling from the mosaic border, i also considered a light sage green.

tour of my crafty closet

after making the decision to move my workspace from the yellow polka-squared room to the now-blue room, things have progressed quickly. i painted the closet with behr {cumulus}, leftover from the stairway and upstairs hallway. i then gathered all of my arts and crafts supplies...and started organizing.

it was SO. MUCH. FUN!

the result:

wooden hangers for the coat closet

i recently started thinking about replacing the tubular plastic hangers in our coat closet with some nice, strong wooden ones. after some intial research, i found they were either {well made + expensive} or {cheap + mediocre quality}.

so i shelved the idea.

but THEN...i went to my very first estate sale yesterday -- and the closet was packed with wooden hangers! nice ones!

each bundle of TEN was only EIGHT DOLLARS!

so i bought thirty hangers.
after seeing how expensive wooden hangers can be, it took immense willpower not to snap them all up.

outgoing mail

<<< psst! you can see a full list of my diy projects here! >>>

we needed a place by the front door to leave outgoing mail...so fish used his handy dandy miter saw to cut a slit into this piece of scrap lumber.

the other side of the door

do you remember the horizontal five-panel door i painted black? here's the other side of the door -- it faces the garage.

it doesn't look that bad from all the way back here.

but LOOK.

a little bit o' moulding

we made a small, but significant ((to me)), change to our built-ins:
we added the teeniest bit of moulding to fancy them up!

here's a better look:

outdoor dining and future plans

we bought a patio set! we didn't need one...but it was a great price and we had a 10% off coupon.

saving for windows?

now we can dine outside!

painted chevron door

<<< psst! you can see a full list of my diy projects here! >>>

i painted another door...and i love it! the first one i painted is here.
this is the back of the powder room's door -- the bathroom i painted behr vintage velvet. the white and gold chevron stripes lighten up the space significantly.

cubs pins decor

there are a few clues that a chicago cubs fan is living in this house. we've got a win flag in our bathroom, a large wrigley field print in our sunroom, and...did you catch the cubs chime by our garage doornot sure where that's going yet.

i added another dimension of cubs-lovin' by
hot-glueing these pins near our kitchen lightswitch.

chalkboard wall in the kitchen

we have a bit of useless wall in our kitchen...

instead of letting it be wasted space, we decided to hit it with some chalkboard paint and start keeping our grocery list there.

coat closet surprise

<<< psst! you can see a full list of my diy projects here! >>>

i decided to paint the plain ol' door of our coat closet...
i got a little too excited and started painting before taking a picture!

my favorite thing to get in the mail...

i'm making new pillow covers for the sunroom in anticipation of the day we get a new GREY sofa. you know, in five or six years, whenever we're done paying off windows...

father's day photo montage

while deciding what photos to frame in our stairwell, i came across one of my favorite photo projects with K. it was fish's first father's day and i made a cheapie cardboard sign for K to hold. i took tooooons of pictures, but no one picture was just right...so i ended up making a montage of several different pictures.

new file cabinet
...and lyrical art

<<< psst! you can see a full list of my diy projects here! >>>

we were in desperate need of a file cabinet and i wasn't having any luck on craigslist. there were lots listed, but i either wasn't willing to pay the asking price or someone beat me to it. we finally caved and got one from ikea. sigh.

the institutional grey color wasn't really working with my color scheme though...so i spraypainted it.

the stairway is DONE!

i painted SO. MANY. FRAMES.
